Beauty Tips From a Guy

19 Apr 2013 / 0 Comments / in Uncategorized/by admin

First Impressions: What do Guys really think?

Ever wonder what goes on in a guy’s mind ? Read on and get the inside scoop on what guy’s really think about your style!
Vodana_GuyTip1

1. We don’t just like one hairstyle

Most guys don’t care about a particular hairstyle, as long as it looks nice. Some prefer long locks over short curls, but almost all guys love when a girl ties her hair in a bun. Simply tying your hair up every now and then can keep your image fresh.

2. We like casual more than edgy

?Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.??- Leonardo da Vinci.

Guys prefer a natural approach to styling because it’ll make you seem relatable and down to earth. There are obvious exceptions like parties and dances, but minimal styles work best for everyday looks.

3. We like hair that smells good

Hair care and general hygiene is a must for both girls and guys. A fruity conditioner or light hair perfume can boost a girl’s charm and confidence.

4. We like lip gloss

Lip gloss keeps your lips looking natural, but with a shine. It’s low-maintennance but cute.

5. Don’t cake your face with makeup

Applying makeup doesn’t mean getting ready for a circus act. Rule of thumb is the less makeup you have, the better. if people can’t recognize you without makeup, you’re wearing too much or too often. Besides, the point of makeup is to compliment and highlight your natural features, not to hide them.

6. Don’t over pluck or shave off your eyebrows

It’s really distracting to talk to someone when they look permanently surprised. You might feel sexy with drawn in eyebrows but it’ll put off most guys. Shaping the eyebrows via plucking, waxing or threading look more inviting to the eyes.

7. We don’t care if you get your nails done.

Guys could care less if your nails are glammed out. As long as they aren’t those excessively long acrylic nails, we don’t care.

Cotton Pillowcases & Hair: the Dysfunctional Relationship

09 Apr 2013 / 0 Comments / in blog, Uncategorized/by vpblogger

You may be sleeping on something so dangerous for your hair, yet not even know it. Yes, that’s right, it’s your cotton pillowcase.

vodanacottonpillowcase

Majority of the population sleeps on cotton pillowcases–but is it the best option for your hair?

Cotton pillowcases, no matter how smooth they feel to your hands, have a rougher texture and absorb moisture (making it convenient for towels, but not so much for pillows). Many cosmetic surgeons have stated the detrimental effects of cotton pillowcases to not only your hair but your face. While we may laugh at the “sleep creases” on our faces in the morning, they can actually be detrimental to our skin, causing easy wrinkles due to the friction against the cotton with our skin. This friction applies to hair as well. The friction can damage your hair, cause dryness, and breakage. So what’s the solution? Most professionals recommend changing your pillowcases to silk or satin, which are much smoother on your face and hair.

Now we’re not saying you should immediately go out and change your pillowcases, but if you’re suffering from dry hair and skin, it may be something to think about.

Signs that you may need to change your pillowcase:

1. You’re a wild sleeper.

This means you wake up every day with sleep creases on your face, and you are not a still sleeper. More movement means more friction between your skin/hair against the cotton.

2. If you have curly and/or dry hair.

For those with curly and naturally dry hair, this is something to seriously contemplate.

3. You have fine and/or fragile hair.

Chances are, if you have fine and/or fragile hair, your hair is more prone to breaking.

4. You are a belly or side sleeper.

Majority of the population are side and/or belly sleepers. This may be the most comfortable position for you, but you are more likely to have facial wrinkles due to constant contact with your sheets.

5. Your hair is constantly matted or dry.

If you already have dry hair, the cotton pillowcase is prone to make it worse. We’re not sure if the A + B = C, but we’re pretty sure that DRY + DRIER doesnt equal moisture.

While some professionals swear that cotton pillowcases are the enemy, others claim it’s a myth. Whatever the case, we are simply the messengers to give you something to think about.

Dandruff

27 Mar 2013 / 0 Comments / in blog, Uncategorized/by vpblogger

Dandruff–that white flaky stuff that comes out of your hair that makes you want to avoid wearing black. Dandruff–the thing that makes our scalp so itchy. Dandruff–that thing that makes us self-conscious. Dandruff–who can possibly love it?!
vodanadandruff
We are constantly shedding skin cells whether we realize or not. But the problem occurs when the process is sped up. Dandruff occurs when your scalp sheds skins cells at a faster rate, causing them to clump together and create white flakes (eww!) that are visible.

While dandruff may be caused by the dryness of the scalp, this isn’t always true. This leads many people to believe that washing your hair less will decrease the amount of dandruff; however, it may do the complete opposite.  Flaking happens when too much skin is shed and/or a fungal infection caused by the bacteria Malassezia. Not washing your hair can cause more oil and dead skin cells to build up, allowing a more suitable atmosphere for the fungi to continue growing. If washing your hair every day causes your hair to be dry and brittle, we suggest using an anti-dandruff shampoo instead.

So how can dandruff be treated?

vodana_dandruff_1

moderate dandruff can be treated with an anti-dandruff shampoo with the following ingredients: selenium sulphide and zinc pyritione.
severe dandruff can be treated with an anti-fungal shampoo that can stop the Malassezia fungus. most of these shampoos are to be used for a time span of two to four weeks.
If your dandruff continues even after the use of these shampoos, it is highly suggested that a dermatologist be seen, for there may be more severe causes for dandruff.

Ode to Celtic Hair

17 Mar 2013 / 0 Comments / in blog, News/by admin

Hair in Celtic culture demonstrated types of supernatural connections. The longer your hair or beard, the better your position in society.

Brunettes were thought to have some sort of connection with the earth, while blonds had a connection with God. Redheads, which is commonly associated with the Irish, were thought to have supernatural power.
Hair was held in importance in Celtic tradition because the head was thought to represent one’s soul.

redhair
Men & women both wore their hair curled for ceremonies and special occasions, but mostly wore their hair long and loose, which was considered “barbaric” by the Anglo Normans.
Braids were often worn in Celtic tradition and the long hair applied to religious positions as monks, priests, and nuns.
Cutting someone’s hair or beard short was considered committing a dishonor, and the person would need to hide indoors until his hair or beard was at an acceptable length. Because the head was held in importance (it was a representation of one’s soul), when in battle, the heads of the enemy would be saved.
Where as red hair has had negative connotations in other cultures, (ie. witches, wolves and vampires), red hair was considered valuable, magical and of high prestige in Celtic tradition. This just goes on to show that “one’s trash is another’s treasure”
