You may be sleeping on something harmful for your hair, yet not even know it. Yes, that’s right, it’s your cotton pillowcase.

The majority of the population sleeps on cotton pillowcases–but are they the best option for your hair?
Cotton pillowcases, no matter how smooth they feel to your hands, have a rougher texture and absorb moisture (making it convenient for towels, but not so much for pillows). Many cosmetic surgeons have stated the detrimental effects of cotton pillowcases to not only your hair but your face. While we may laugh at the “sleep creases” on our faces in the morning, they can actually be detrimental to our skin, causing easy wrinkles due to the friction against the cotton with our skin. This friction applies to hair as well. The friction can damage your hair, cause dryness, and breakage. So what’s the solution? Most professionals recommend changing your pillowcases to silk or satin, which are much smoother on your face and hair.
Now we’re not saying you should immediately go out and change your pillowcases, but if you’re suffering from dry hair and skin, it may be something to think about.
Signs that you may need to change your pillowcase:
1. You’re a wild sleeper.
This means you wake up every day with sleep creases on your face, and you are not a still sleeper. More movement means more friction between your skin/hair against the cotton.
2. If you have curly and/or dry hair.
For those with curly and naturally dry hair, this is something to seriously contemplate.
3. You have fine and/or fragile hair.
Chances are, if you have fine and/or fragile hair, your hair is more prone to breaking.
4. You are a belly or side sleeper.
Majority of the population are side and/or belly sleepers. This may be the most comfortable position for you, but you are more likely to have facial wrinkles due to constant contact with your sheets.
5. Your hair is constantly matted or dry.
If you already have dry hair, the cotton pillowcase is prone to make it worse. We’re not sure if the A + B = C, but we’re pretty sure that DRY + DRIER doesnt equal moisture.
While some professionals swear that cotton pillowcases are the enemy, others claim it’s a myth. Whatever the case, we are simply the messengers to give you something to think about.
